    Cet article examine la façon dont les enseignants perçoivent l’efficacité du tutorat privé en Malaisie. Se fondant sur des données provenant de trois États – Perak, Selangor et Wilayah Persekutuan – les conclusions suggèrent que les enseignants considèrent que ce tutorat est efficace, à la fois pour améliorer les performances scolaires mais également sur d’autres plans, tels que le développement des stratégies d’apprentissage, du niveau de confiance et de l’esprit critique. Toutefois, ces mêmes données suggèrent que l’incidence du tutorat privé ne signifie pas pour autant que la société n’accorde aucune confiance à l’institution scolaire. Les enseignants perçoivent qu’ils contribuent de manière positive à l’apprentissage de leurs élèves et qu’ils exercent une influence positive sur leur vie grâce à leur pédagogie en les aidant à progresser, y compris les moins motivés d’entre eux

    Employability skills for hospitality students in Malaysia

    Malaysia needs high skilled workforce to support growth of the industry. With dynamically changing job market and progressive technological change, employees are expected to keep abreast of global economics. In the process of achieving the status of developed nation by the year 2020, Malaysia needs to restructure its workforce to ensure that middle level workers are highly skilled. Current job environment demands multi-task and skills. Thus, university graduates must be prepared to meet the demand especially in the hospitality industry. The purpose of this study is to identify the level of employability skills in the hospitality field. This research applied quantitative methodology. The respondents consist of final year students in bakery and culinary programme. Stratified sampling was used to select students in hospitality programs from 22 vocational colleges in Malaysia. Questionnaires were distributed to 841 students in five regions which are Central, South, North, East and East Malaysia (Sarawak) in Malaysia. Descriptive analysis was used to analyse the quantitative data. The results showed that the level of hospitality employability skills among vocational students in Malaysia were at high level of competence (93.2%). The research has brought meaningful implications for hospitality vocational students, employers and policy makers

    Education is a key factor in human capital, social, economic, technological and political development of the society. Higher education institutions helps in producing high level manpower needed to attain speedy, purposeful and sustainable development in modern society. It provides students with skills and technical knowledge needed in coping with difficulties in the changing society. For higher learning institutions to perform their duties as expected, the need to employ skilled and competent experts in academic community is indispensable. This paper aims to overview the issues in regard to employability and gender in higher learning institutions. Moreover it tries to clarify the roles of policy makers and academic leaders in ensuring equal opportunity for all as a way of ensuring sustainable development. In order to achieve the goals of higher education globally, there is a need for re-orientation of people on gender disparity. Policy makers and academic leaders need to set a pace for others to follow by promulgating laws and guidelines that will ensure reasonable representation of skilled and competent personnel in academic community and eradicate gender segregation in employment process. Universities should be help and encourage students to develop their skills and capabilities. Concise effort must be made in supervising, guiding and evaluating students training program from time to time. This is to help students to thrive and compete favourable with their counterpart at workplace without facing the issues of gender and segregation.&nbsp

    Gaps between competence and importance of employability skills: evidence from Malaysia

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify the gaps between the importance perceived and the competence gained by the hospitality students in terms of the employability skills. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaires were distributed to 841 hospitality students in five regions in Malaysia. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Findings – The findings show that there are significant differences between importance perceived and competence attained in teamwork, leadership, basic, technical skills and ethical skills. Additionally, the finding of this study indicates that the culinary and bakery students perceive that they are not given adequate exposure to possess such skills. It is important to ensure that graduates are equipped with the twenty-first century skills such as problem solving and analytic, decision making, organization and time management, risk taking and communication. Research limitations/implications – The findings provide insights to curriculum developers and policy makers on the appropriate interventions that need to be taken to improve the employability skills of the graduates. Originality/value – An original contribution is made by linking employability model to TVET sector

    Pengurusan disiplin murid di sekolah kawasan bandar dan luar bandar: perspektif pemimpin sekolah

    Although the low achievement of a school discipline associated with students’ misconduct, there is a high correlation between good school discipline and student achievement. Therefore, this study aims to identify the effectiveness and differences of school discipline management in urban and rural areas. A quantitative survey method was applied and questionnaire was distributed to the total of 80 school leaders that included 47 from urban and 33 from rural areas in selected schools in Malaysia. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic including percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistic for Mann-Whitney U test. The study found that the effectiveness of managing students’ discipline in both rural and urban schools is high and shows satisfactory when the mean score is 4.00 and standard deviations is 0.79. Furthermore, the results show that that there is no significant differences between urban and rural schools in managing the students’ discipline at p>0.05. In addition, this study found that the importance of the school factors especially school leaders in managing the students’ discipline systematically involving planning, organizing, leading and controlling

    This article analyzes differences in the operation of school excellence practices in two types of the high achievement schools in Malaysia i.e. boarding schools and religious schools.In particular, this study aims to identify the differences between in the excellence school practices and school leadership in the two types of the high achievement schools.To achieve the research objectives, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 180 boarding school teachers and 180 religious school teachers by applying the survey method. The questionnaire that was developed by Muhammad Faizal A. Ghani (2008) was used as this study’s instrument. The instrument addresses the following seven dimensions as contributing factors to the effectiveness of the schools i.e. professional leadership, conducive school environment, concentrate of teaching and learning, high expectations, continuous assessment, collaboration and cooperation between school and home,and the school as a learning organization. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentage and inferential statistics i.e. Mann-Whitney U test.This study found that a significant difference exists between the boarding schools and the religious schools in practicing the following excellence school practices i.e. principal leadership when the score p=0.001, and conducive school environment (p=0.003). In fact, the practices were better implemented by communities in the boarding schools compared to the religious school communities.This is true when the ranking mean of boarding schools is higher than the score of religious schools. Meanwhile, the element of school is rich in data and information is also practiced differently in both boarding and religious schools when the score p=0.007. However, the element is implemented more effectively in religious schools than in boarding schools. In other words, there was no significant difference between the both boarding and religious schools in other excellence school practices i.e. concentrate on teaching and learning,high expectations, continuous assessment, collaboration between school and home, and the school as a learning organization when the score p>0.05. The study also found there was a significant difference between the both boarding and religious schools in practicing the style of principal leadership when the score p=0.001. In this case,the practice is implemented more effective by school principals in the boarding schools than the religious schools when the ranking mean score of the boarding schools is more than religious schools’. However,there was no significant difference between both boarding and religious schools in practicing the teacher leadership style when the score p=0.531. The main implication of this study is to show the important need of principals to improve their own skills and to develop methos to improve student achievement

    Shadow education: patterns and scale of private supplementary tutoring in English in secondary education at urban Dhaka in Bangladesh

    Private supplementary tutoring with an additional fee is generally called shadow education, and this has become a common phenomenon in urban Dhaka, where patterns and scale of tutoring in English have been remarkable in recent years. This study used a mixed-methods approach that included quantitative and qualitative data collected from a survey and individual interview. Tutoring in English has been a regular feature of the teaching profession in this urban area. The paper examines various patterns of private tutoring in English and focuses on the amount of tutoring, including the tutoring received and not received by students in urban Dhaka. It shows the variations of scale regarding tutoring in English between male and female students. The study also identifies different types of private tutors who deliver supplementary tutoring. Finally, the choices pupils make regarding their evaluation on the effectiveness of shapes of tutoring in English are discussed

    A model for youth entrepreneurship skills of the community-based leadership training for the urban youth in China

    With the rapid social and economic development, the entrepreneurship skills become more important for the youth to ensure positive development of youth leadership skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate the entrepreneurship skills of urban youth and then develop a model for youth entrepreneurship skills of the community-based leadership training for the urban youth in China. In this study, two methods have been applied: students’ questionnaire survey and the Fuzzy Delphi Method by experts. This study involved 526 students aged 14 to 18 years old in four secondary schools and high schools in Baoding city, Shijiazhuang city, Chengde city and Handan city in Hebei Province for survey. The findings from the survey show that the levels of entrepreneurship skills are still at moderate level. The Fuzzy Delphi Method was conducted to eighteen experts from the fields of education, language, Chinese Studies, accounting and business, and life sciences to get a consensus on youth entrepreneurship skills and related activities. The results demonstrate that there are three categories of skills for the entrepreneurship namely, visiting the local famous enterprises; the lecture activities of successful entrepreneur to share their experiences to make the youth start to learn entrepreneurship; and the activities of financial literacy and personal finance. © 2019, University of Malaya.     Financial Literacy Education And Retirement Planning In Malaysia

    Lack of education in financial literacy would lead to fallacious retirement planning decisions among elderly people. Many elderly people are facing dilemma of not having sufficient money to maintain their living upon retirement and this problem is becoming worse over time. Thus, this qualitative study explores the financial literacy education of elderly people and the influence on retirement planning in Malaysia. Data for probing the influence of financial literacy education on financial retirement planning of elderly people in Malaysia were collected using semi-structured interview questions and document analysis. Data were collected from 10 elderly people with financial education background and have experience in dealing with financial planning for retirement from Klang Valley, Malaysia. Purposeful sampling technique was used to collect data and thematic analysis was used to interpret the data collected in this study. The results of this study indicated that financial literacy education along with demographic factors and financial attitude factors play a crucial role in financial retirement planning before retirement. The results further indicate that psychological factors like monetary goal-setting, early financial exposure and financial awareness affect elderly people in enhancing financial literacy education, which eventually influence financial retirement planning. In order to improve on the financial planning for retirement, policy makers and government need to implement financial literacy education policy to aid elderly people in financial planning and retire with financial freedom
